New Delhi, March 24: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The conversation was confirmed by U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, on Tuesday. India has consistently emphasized resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.
This marks the first telephone conversation between the two leaders since the outbreak of war in West Asia. They discussed the current situation in the Middle East, particularly the importance of maintaining safe and open navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. This region is a critical route for global oil supply, and recent conflicts have heightened tensions there.
Sergio Gor shared on X that President Trump and Prime Minister Modi discussed the ongoing conditions in the Middle East, including the significance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
The conflict between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran has been ongoing for nearly 25 days. Attacks and blockades by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global oil and gas supplies. India imports over 60% of its crude oil and gas from this region, making the crisis a direct threat to its energy security.
During his addresses to the Lok Sabha on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, PM Modi described the crisis as “worrisome” and stated that India is in constant contact with all parties involved (Iran, Israel, the U.S., and Gulf nations). He emphasized the need for de-escalation and dialogue.
On Monday, in a conversation with reporters, President Trump claimed that meaningful discussions are ongoing between the U.S. and Iran. He noted that communications with Iranian representatives have been positive and productive, leading him to instruct his officials not to attack Iranian energy facilities for the next five days. However, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that there are no talks occurring between Tehran and Washington.
Previously, Trump had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
