Ujjain, June 15: On Monday, the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple held a grand Bhasma Aarti for Baba Mahakal in celebration of Somvati Amavasya. Thousands of devotees participated in this sacred ritual, where Baba Mahakal was adorned with bhang. The deity was beautifully decorated with Lord Ganesha on his head and adorned with the trident before the Bhasma was applied.
Early in the morning, after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, the temple doors were opened with the sound of drums and trumpets. As devotees caught their first glimpse of Baba Mahakal following the divine adornment and Bhasma Aarti, the temple resonated with the chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.” The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and mantras.
With the opening of the temple gates, the water abhishekam for Lord Mahakal commenced, using milk, yogurt, ghee, sugar, Panchamrit, and fruit juices, accompanied by the offering of “Hari Om” as the first bell rang.
The temple priests conducted the Mahaarati, and a large number of devotees witnessed the Bhasma Aarti of Baba Mahakal. Many devotees had queued since late Saturday night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity.
Priest Mahesh Sharma shared insights, stating, “According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu arranged for an extra month in the lunar calendar, known as ‘Adhik Maas.’ This is considered an additional month beyond the usual twelve. It is believed that during this period, Lord Narasimha incarnated and vanquished the demon who did not believe in Sanatan Dharma.”
He emphasized the significance of the Somvati Amavasya festival. The importance of Avantika increases during Somvati and Shanishchari. On Somvati Amavasya, thousands of devotees flock to see Baba Mahakal, while on Shanishchari Amavasya, many visit Shani temples.
Priest Mahesh Sharma further explained that during this period, performing virtuous deeds, making donations, and worshiping Lord Vishnu yield special rewards. He noted that the duration from one Amavasya to the next is considered Jyeshtha month, concluding with Somvati Amavasya. Today, people will bathe in rivers and visit sacred sites for blessings. Temples dedicated to Shiva will witness a surge of devotees.
