Seoul, March 12: South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok will depart for the United States on Thursday. His mission is to promote South Korea’s proposal to host a UN hub and to meet with senior US officials, possibly including Vice President JD Vance.
Prime Minister Kim’s week-long trip includes stops in the United States and Geneva, Switzerland. This visit comes at a time when the government is actively pursuing the potential hosting of a “UN AI Hub.” The aim is to bring together various UN entities and South Korea’s private and public sectors to develop AI-based solutions for global challenges.
Sources indicate that a meeting with Vice President JD Vance is scheduled during his stay in Washington. They may discuss tariffs and other bilateral issues, including a bill supporting South Korea’s $350 billion investment commitment in the US, which is set to be passed by the National Assembly on Thursday. Kim and JD Vance previously met in Washington in January.
Following his time in Washington, the Prime Minister will travel to New York, where he plans to visit the United Nations, UNICEF, and the UN Development Program. He will engage with leaders, including Antonio Guterres, to discuss the AI hub initiative.
In Geneva, his visit will focus on similar discussions with the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the International Organization for Migration.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, Prime Minister Kim has also been appointed as the head of the UN AI Hub Bid Committee this week. He is likely to brief Vice President JD Vance on a special act regarding strategic investment management between South Korea and the United States. This bill is expected to be passed under a bilateral agreement and is likely to be a key topic of discussion.
Afterward, Prime Minister Kim will consult with the UN, UNICEF, and the UN Development Program in New York regarding the AI hub. The UN AI Hub is designed as a global platform to enhance collaboration on AI-related tasks among UN specialized agencies and departments. It represents a new initiative proposed by the South Korean government.
