
New Delhi, April 20: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is currently on a visit to India. On Monday, he held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House. During this meeting, they also participated in the ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’ campaign by planting a tree together.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared images on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “As part of a special initiative, President Lee planted an Ashoka tree, the state tree of Uttar Pradesh, in New Delhi alongside Prime Minister Modi.”
Jaiswal noted that this tree will take root in the ‘Queen Heo Hwang-ok Memorial Park’ located in Ayodhya, symbolizing the shared heritage of India and South Korea.
Earlier in the day, President Lee, accompanied by First Lady Kim, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi.
During the summit, several significant agreements, joint statements, and announcements were made to enhance bilateral relations between India and the Republic of Korea.
Both nations agreed to further strengthen economic cooperation, focusing on new opportunities in shipbuilding, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, and supply chains. There was also a convergence of views on various global and regional issues, including the Indo-Pacific.
Prime Minister Modi and President Lee engaged with leaders from the business sector, emphasizing the importance of boosting business collaboration. President Lee is also participating in the India-Korea Business Forum, attended by numerous business leaders. Additionally, financial cooperation forums in Delhi and ‘Space Day’ events in Bengaluru are being organized.
During this visit, multiple agreements were reached in areas such as trade, shipping, environment, science and technology, education, and culture. Four joint statements were issued, with the ‘India-ROK Joint Strategic Vision’ being a key highlight, outlining a roadmap for the future of relations between the two countries.
Cooperation in the maritime sector has been given special importance, with a new framework established for shipbuilding and logistics. Shared strategies for climate change and energy security have also been developed.
President Lee Jae-myung stated, “In this era of uncertainty, we agree that India and Korea can be the best partners for large-scale cooperation to promote mutual development and innovation. We also agreed to enhance collaboration in strategic industries such as shipbuilding, AI, finance, and defense, while promoting cultural exchanges and people-to-people interactions.”
