New Delhi, April 21: Iran has now experienced 53 days of an internet shutdown. This follows widespread devastation due to ongoing conflicts, and the country is currently in a phase of reconstruction. According to internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, Iran’s connection to the outside world has been severed for approximately 1,248 hours.
A graphic shared on social media platform X indicates that instead of fully restoring internet access, the government has granted limited access to select individuals and businesses. The majority of the population remains isolated from global internet connectivity.
NetBlocks reports that the government is implementing a “tiered system” for internet access. This means that only specific individuals or organizations will receive internet access, while the general public will continue to be deprived of it.
This situation has led to two significant negative impacts on the ground. First, the lives of ordinary people have been severely affected; their daily existence has changed dramatically. Second, businesses are not operating at the expected pace, which is causing harm to the economy.
The organization warns that if this kind of digital censorship persists, the consequences could be dire. A large segment of the population, approximately 90 million people, remains cut off from the internet.
Just hours after the first bomb fell in Tehran on February 28, the government nearly completely shut down internet access across Iran. This action reduced connectivity to about 2% of pre-conflict levels.
According to Al Jazeera, a limited intranet is keeping some local services and apps operational, but public satisfaction is low. This digital blackout has resulted in billions of dollars in lost revenue for the economy.
