South Korea Plans Nuclear-Powered Submarines Amid North Korean Tensions

Seoul, August 13: South Korea has recently announced its plans to develop nuclear-powered submarines. This marks the first official response from North Korea regarding the matter. North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Jang Kum-chol stated that Seoul’s move is a step towards acquiring nuclear weapons. He described the submarine collaboration between the U.S. and South Korea as a threat to stability on the Korean Peninsula.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the South Korean Ministry of Unification noted that this is the first official statement from North Korea on this issue. Pyongyang’s reaction comes at a time when it is also criticizing Japan’s nuclear policy and the increasing security cooperation among South Korea, the U.S., and Japan. North Korea perceives this collaboration as a challenge to its security.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) issued a statement on Wednesday, claiming that North Korea is developing military capabilities to neutralize current and future potential threats. South Korean officials believe this statement reflects North Korea’s growing alignment with the security perspectives of Russia and China.

Meanwhile, South Korea has dismissed North Korea’s accusations, asserting that the development of nuclear-powered submarines is a defensive measure in response to the changing security environment. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon emphasized that the proposed submarines will be equipped with conventional weapons, not nuclear arms, and that the program aligns with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Seoul has also committed to maintaining transparent consultations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The plan for South Korea’s nuclear-powered submarines has evolved beyond just a matter of defense modernization. North Korea views it as a shift in the regional power balance and a step towards potential nuclearization. According to sources, this development adds another dimension to the increasing strategic tensions among North Korea, Russia, and China on the Korean Peninsula.
