The Delhi Government’s Finance Expenditure Committee has approved a major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in South Delhi. The project involves constructing a 6-lane integrated elevated road along MB Road, stretching from Saket G-Block to Pul Prahladpur, along with two underpasses. This development is expected to provide significant relief from long-standing traffic jams and reduce travel time substantially for commuters in the area.
The project, estimated to cost around ₹1471.14 crore, is targeted for completion by December 2027. It will cover approximately five kilometres and will be divided into two sections. The first elevated road will run 2.42 kilometres from Saket G-Block to Sangam Vihar, and the second will extend about 2.48 kilometres from Maa Anandmai Marg to Pul Prahladpur.
The meeting of the Finance Expenditure Committee, held on Tuesday at the Delhi Secretariat, was chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. After a detailed discussion on the technical, financial, and structural aspects, the project received official approval. The Chief Minister highlighted that this initiative will play a key role in streamlining and improving the traffic network in South Delhi.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be responsible for executing the construction. The project will be developed in alignment with the existing DMRC corridor to ensure better integration between road and metro infrastructure. The elevated structure will feature a double-decker system with six lanes; the metro will operate on the upper deck while the road corridor will run below it.
In addition to the elevated road, two underpasses will be constructed at Saket G-Block and on the BRT corridor. This design aims to maximise capacity in limited space and will effectively double traffic movement speed in densely populated areas such as Saket G-Block, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur, and Sangam Vihar. Furthermore, the Delhi Government has given in-principle approval for a six-lane elevated road approximately 2.5 kilometres long from Sangam Vihar to Maa Anandmai Marg. This proposal is currently being forwarded to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Tughlaqabad Fort.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised that the investment in this project will bring comprehensive improvement to South Delhi’s traffic system. It will ease the frequent and prolonged jams on MB Road, increase average vehicle speeds, and save time for millions of commuters. She stated that the government is committed to providing modern, accessible infrastructure that meets the city’s future needs.
