New Delhi, June 28: In their final group match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, South Africa triumphed over Bangladesh. However, despite this victory, South Africa must now await the outcome of the match between India and Australia on Sunday to determine their semifinal fate. South African captain Laura Wolvaardt has expressed her support for Australia.
Following the win against Bangladesh, Wolvaardt remarked that while her team secured the victory, the match turned out to be more thrilling than anticipated. “Winning was crucial, and ultimately, the team managed to achieve it,” she stated.
Wolvaardt praised her bowlers for their performance, saying, “The experienced bowlers put pressure on Bangladesh during the powerplay. In the final overs, the opposition was allowed to score some extra runs. If Bangladesh had been restricted to 100 runs or fewer, chasing the target would have been much easier.”
She also commended Bangladesh’s spin attack, noting that their spinners consistently varied their pace on the slow pitch. “Our batsmen struggled to play freely. The team needs to adopt a more positive approach in such conditions,” she added.
Now, South Africa’s eyes are set on the upcoming match between India and Australia. With a smile, Wolvaardt mentioned that she will be watching from the stands, cheering for Australia. “Our team has done its part, but now we hope Australia can defeat India to secure our place in the semifinals,” she said.
While South Africa has earned two vital points, their future in the World Cup now hinges on the results of the other match.
In the match against Bangladesh, the latter scored 117 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs, while South Africa chased down the target, scoring 118 runs for 6 wickets in 19.2 overs, winning by 4 wickets.
