Wellington, March 22: South African wicketkeeper-batsman Conor Esterhuizen delivered an impressive performance in the fourth T20 match against New Zealand, scoring 57 runs off 36 balls. The 24-year-old showcased his skills with 3 sixes and 7 fours. Esterhuizen revealed that his strategy was to wait for the ball and play only what was presented to him.
Making his international debut in this series, Esterhuizen had previously scored an unbeaten 45 in the first match, followed by scores of 8 and 15. Finally, in the fourth T20, he achieved his first half-century. Across four T20 matches, he has accumulated a total of 125 runs at an average of 41.66.
Born on May 31, 2001, in Johannesburg, Esterhuizen attended St. John’s College. Although he was not part of South Africa’s junior teams, he made rapid progress after debuting for the Lions in 2022. He has already represented the South Africa ‘A’ team and played in the SA20 league for MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals.
Thanks to Esterhuizen’s stellar innings, South Africa posted a score of 164/5 and restricted the Kiwi team to just 145 runs in 18.5 overs, winning the match by 19 runs. This victory brought the series to a 2-2 tie, setting the stage for a decisive fifth T20 match in Christchurch on March 25.
In the post-match press conference, Esterhuizen reflected on his performance, stating, “In the second match of the series, I was perhaps a bit too defensive. My intentions weren’t as strong as they could have been. In the last match, I was trying to play a shot on every ball, whereas in this innings, I focused on playing what was in front of me, waiting for balls within my range. That was the main difference.”
New Zealand rested several key players, allowing Esterhuizen the opportunity to play for the Proteas. He described the experience as highly rewarding, saying, “I enjoyed every moment of my first tour with the Proteas. The lessons I learn here will help me handle pressure and scrutiny. I don’t think anyone masters it completely, but the more you face it, the more accustomed you become. That was the key message from Coach Shukri (Conrad) before the tour, especially for new players, that we need to experience pressure and scrutiny.”
Esterhuizen added, “I have been trying to elevate my game. Most people have talent, but utilizing that talent and making the right decisions can be challenging. As you progress in this sport, that becomes crucial. Another important aspect is how to deal with failures, as this game is about overcoming setbacks. When you succeed, you must embrace that success. The way you handle failures as you climb higher will serve you well.”
