South Africa Dominates Canada in T20 World Cup Opener

Ahmedabad, February 9: South Africa has kicked off its T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding victory. The team secured a 57-run win against Canada at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.

Batting first after losing the toss, South Africa posted an impressive total of 213 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. The opening pair of Quinton de Kock and captain Aiden Markram provided a solid start, putting together a partnership of 70 runs in just 6.5 overs.

Quinton de Kock scored 25 runs off 22 balls, hitting 2 fours before being dismissed. Following his exit, Ryan Rickelton partnered with Markram to add 56 runs for the second wicket in 28 balls. Markram contributed 59 runs, including 1 six and 10 fours, while Rickelton scored 33 runs off 21 balls.

Despite losing 4 wickets for just 138 runs, Tristan Stubbs (not out on 34) and David Miller (not out on 39) combined for a crucial 75-run partnership off 37 balls, pushing the team past the 200-run mark. For Canada, Ansh Patel took 3 wickets, while Dilpreet Singh claimed 1.

In response, Canada struggled to reach 156 runs, losing 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. They lost their captain, Dilpreet Bajwa, for a duck on the very first ball.

Navneet Dhaliwal came in at number three but witnessed a flurry of wickets fall at the other end. Canada lost their fourth wicket at a mere 45 runs.

Dhaliwal then formed a partnership of 69 runs for the fifth wicket with Harsh Thakar, helping the team surpass the 100-run mark. Harsh scored 33 runs off 29 balls, while Dhaliwal made 64 runs off 49 balls, including 1 six and 7 fours, but could not guide his team to victory.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi was the standout bowler, taking 4 wickets, while Marco Jansen claimed 2. Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch each took 1 wicket.
