New Delhi, March 13: Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla believes that the pitch at MA Chidambaram Stadium will suit Sanju Samson well. Samson is set to play his first season for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 after being traded from Rajasthan Royals before the auction.
Samson enters the tournament on the back of impressive performances in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. He played a remarkable innings against the West Indies in the Super 8 stage and scored a powerful 89 runs off 42 balls in the semi-final against England. In the final against New Zealand, he played a crucial role, scoring 89 runs to help India clinch the championship.
Chawla stated that Samson’s form will be highly beneficial for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming season. He told ‘JioCinema’, “Sanju Samson is a match-winner in his own right. He proved his critics wrong by delivering three strong performances against the West Indies, England, and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. The Chennai team will be very pleased with his form, especially as he has hit peak performance just before the IPL begins. This is great news for Chennai fans. The pitch conditions in Chennai will definitely favor Sanju Samson.”
Before the IPL 2026 auction, Samson was traded from Rajasthan Royals to Chennai Super Kings, replacing Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. He has played 177 IPL matches, scoring 4,707 runs at an average of 30.95, including three centuries and 26 half-centuries. Samson also has considerable captaincy experience.
Chawla further mentioned that Samson’s aggressive style will help address Chennai’s slow start issues. According to the 37-year-old, Samson will open the innings alongside Ayush Mhatre, the captain of India’s Under-19 team, who impressed with his explosive batting last season.
