Slogans Against Brahminism at JNU Spark ABVP Backlash

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) once again became the centre of attention following protests against the Supreme Court’s stay on the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) new regulations. Around 50 left-leaning students and other groups gathered near Sabarmati Dhaba to demonstrate, where they burned an effigy symbolising Brahminism and chanted slogans condemning it.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) reacted strongly to the protest, stating that JNU is a university run with taxpayers’ money and not a factory for raising slogans calling for its destruction.

Priyanshu, associated with ABVP, said the left-wing protesters raised slogans like “BJP and RSS will be destroyed,” and also targeted other communities under the guise of opposing caste-based discrimination. He added that such slogans aim to create unrest within society. While democracy allows freedom of expression, the left-wing’s actions undermine democratic values by using language that disrespects its sanctity. He emphasised that JNU is funded by taxpayers and should not become a platform for destructive slogans.

Krishnakant Dwivedi, a PhD scholar at JNU, remarked that the left’s ecosystem was unsettled after the Supreme Court’s stay, as they had supported the regulations before the stay. He criticised the slogans raised against BJP and RSS during the protest, calling them shameful and offensive. Dwivedi questioned whether the protesters intended to harm the efforts of millions of volunteers and said the demonstration divided the nation, which he found completely unacceptable.

Left-wing activists participating in the protest organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) claimed that the Supreme Court’s stay on the UGC’s new rules supports Brahminism and Manuism.
