Six More Arrested in Tribal Leader Soma Munda Murder Case in Khunti

Khunti Police have made significant progress in the high-profile murder case of tribal leader Padha Raja Soma Munda. Six more accused, including the main shooter, have been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 13.

Before presenting the accused in court, the police conducted a parade at the police lines. The newly arrested individuals include Daniel Sanga (44), Sumit Dal Sand (20), Marcus Sanga (20), Roshan Minz (25), Sandeep Khalkho (35), and Santosh Dalsand (32). All have been sent to judicial custody.

Khunti Superintendent of Police, Praveen Toppo, stated that the murder was the result of a long-standing dispute and a premeditated conspiracy linked to land transactions. The investigation revealed that the accused were involved in the buying and selling of prohibited and non-majuria land under the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT), which led to conflicts with Soma Munda. The conspiracy aimed to eliminate him for economic gain.

Following the incident, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed. Based on technical evidence, mobile call records, and secret information, the police conducted multiple raids leading to the arrests. Items recovered include the country-made pistol used in the murder, four live cartridges, two motorcycles, and other materials.

Soma Munda was shot dead by assailants near Jamuwadag Pond on January 7 while he was travelling on a motorcycle with his wife. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting. In protest against the killing, tribal organisations called for a Jharkhand bandh on January 17, which had a widespread impact across several districts.
