Miami, March 28: World number 2 Jannik Sinner has secured his place in the final of the Miami Open. On Friday evening, he defeated Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-3, 7-6(4). This victory also marks a record of 32 consecutive sets won in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. Sinner is now on the verge of claiming his second consecutive title, having recently won his first at Indian Wells.
In the final scheduled for Sunday, the Italian player will face Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka, who reached his first Masters 1000 final by defeating Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-2 on Friday.
All eyes were on Sinner during the Miami Open semifinals. He aimed to capitalize on the early exit of world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz to win the title and close the gap in ranking points.
The second-seeded player is just one win away from completing the ‘Sunshine Double.’ He could become the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win titles at both Indian Wells and Miami.
Sinner has now won his last seven encounters against Zverev, including two matches this year. The 24-year-old also defeated the German in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open earlier this month. In their ATP head-to-head meetings, Sinner leads 8-4.
The Italian had to save a break point in the third game of the first set but quickly responded by ramping up his aggression. He capitalized on Zverev’s slight dip in first-serve effectiveness, earning a break with a powerful forehand winner to take a 3-1 lead.
In the second set, Zverev increased his intensity and held firm during crucial moments, especially when he saved two break points at 4-4, 15/40. However, Sinner remained composed, consistently holding his serve and pushing the match to a tiebreak. The momentum shifted in Sinner’s favor when Zverev mishit an overhead shot, allowing Sinner to take a 5/4 lead and ultimately secure the match.
Sinner will enter the final against Lehecka with a 3-0 lead in their rivalry, having won their last encounter in straight sets at Roland Garros last year. Since he has no ATP ranking points to defend this year, a title win would place Sinner just 1,540 points behind world number 1 Alcaraz.
