Guwahati, May 12: The High Commission of Singapore in India extended its congratulations to Himanta Biswa Sarma, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following the NDA’s significant victory in the recent Assam Assembly elections. Sarma is set to take the oath of office for a second term as the Chief Minister of Assam.
In a post on the social media platform X, Singapore’s High Commissioner Simon Wong expressed his best wishes to Sarma and reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to supporting Assam’s ongoing progress and development.
Wong referred to Singapore as Assam’s “trusted friend,” emphasizing the island nation’s eagerness to strengthen cooperation with the northeastern state across various sectors.
In his post, the High Commissioner stated, “Congratulations to our dear friend Himanta Biswa Sarma. Your new term as Chief Minister will undoubtedly elevate Assam to new heights. As your trusted friend, we will continue to stand by Assam.”
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, achieved a crucial victory in the Assam Assembly elections, paving the way for Sarma to remain in office for another term.
Sarma will take the oath of office today at approximately 11:40 AM in Guwahati, in the presence of several senior BJP and NDA leaders.
In recent years, Assam and Singapore have significantly enhanced their collaboration in areas such as industrial investment, technology, infrastructure, and skill development. Singapore has emerged as one of the key international partners for the state under India’s Act East Policy.
Since the beginning of 2026, the economic partnership between Assam and Singapore has focused on green energy initiatives, semiconductor manufacturing, and urban planning cooperation.
Many of these initiatives are part of the state’s “Advantage Assam 2.0” program, aimed at attracting global investment and promoting industrial development in the region.
The Assam government is actively involving Singaporean companies in the development of a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem within the Jagiroad Electronic City project.
In January 2026, Sarma met with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during the World Economic Forum to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Assam and Singapore.
In addition to industrial and investment collaboration, both parties have signed an MoU to cooperate in nursing skill development and training programs, aimed at increasing employment opportunities for skilled workers in Singapore.
Officials anticipate that Sarma’s second term will further strengthen the partnership between Assam and Singapore, particularly in advanced manufacturing, clean energy, healthcare training, and urban infrastructure development.
