Siddaramaiah Clarifies Stance on Hindi Language Policy in Karnataka

Mysuru, March 28: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the ongoing controversy regarding the Hindi language on Saturday. He clarified that the state government is not against Hindi but also does not support making it mandatory. He emphasized that no final decision has been made regarding the two-language policy in the state.

During a media interaction at Mysuru Airport, he announced that the government has decided not to include Hindi as a third language in the SSLC (Class 10) results this year. As a result, marks obtained in Hindi will not be counted towards the total score, reducing the maximum marks from 625 to 525.

Siddaramaiah stated, “The government is not against learning Hindi, but it should not be made compulsory for passing exams.” He acknowledged that any government decision will face both support and opposition, and consensus among all is not feasible.

He clarified that the issue is not about imposing Hindi or not learning it, but simply about not making it a mandatory subject. Citing his own student life, he mentioned that Hindi was not compulsory during his time, which is why he did not study it.

Regarding the upcoming by-elections, he expressed confidence that the Congress party will win both the Davanagere and Bagalkot seats. He shared that he will start campaigning on March 30 and will also travel to Kerala for election campaigning on April 5.

The Chief Minister remarked that the recent victories in by-elections are a positive sign for the future, and he believes the party will secure both seats again.

On speculation regarding his position as Chief Minister, he stated that the by-elections are unrelated. He added, “If the party high command permits, I will also present the budget for the next two years. We operate according to the high command’s directives.”

Addressing the issue of drug trafficking in Mysuru, he mentioned that the government has initiated strict actions and aims to make the state drug-free. He revealed that a drug network has been identified in Mysuru, and legal action will be taken against those involved.
