Shubman Gill Scores Fastest Century as Indian Captain in ODI History

Lucknow, June 17: Indian captain Shubman Gill has maintained his impressive form from the IPL into international cricket. After scoring an unbeaten 84 runs against Afghanistan in the first ODI in Dharamshala, Gill achieved a remarkable century in the second ODI held in Lucknow. This century is now the fifth fastest by any Indian captain in ODI history.

Gill scored 154 runs off 110 balls, hitting 2 sixes and 22 fours. He reached his century in just 77 balls, marking it as the fourth fastest century by an Indian captain in the ODI format.

The record for the fastest century by an Indian captain in ODIs is held by Rohit Sharma, who scored a century in just 63 balls against Afghanistan in Delhi in 2023. Virender Sehwag ranks second, having scored a century in 69 balls against the West Indies in 2011. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli share the third spot, with both achieving centuries in 76 balls—Kohli against Sri Lanka in 2017 and Rohit against England in Cuttack in 2025.

Gill’s century is also the fifth fastest century in ODI history against Afghanistan. The record for the fastest ODI century against Afghanistan is held by England’s Eoin Morgan, who scored in 57 balls in Manchester in 2019. Rohit Sharma follows him with his 63-ball century in 2023. Ishan Kishan also made headlines in the ongoing ODI, scoring a century in 71 balls, marking it as the third fastest against Afghanistan. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, Glenn Maxwell scored a century in 76 balls against Afghanistan, which was the fourth fastest in ODI history against the team, leading Australia to an incredible victory with a double century.
