Shubman Gill Makes History as India Defeats Afghanistan in ODI Opener

Dharamshala, June 14: India triumphed over Afghanistan by seven wickets in a rain-affected first ODI match on Saturday. The star of the match was captain Shubman Gill, who scored a remarkable 84 runs off 66 balls at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium. During this innings, Gill achieved a significant milestone.

Gill became the fastest Indian batsman to reach 3,000 runs in One Day Internationals, accomplishing this feat in just 61 innings. He surpassed former opener Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the milestone in 72 innings. Only South Africa‘s Hashim Amla has completed 3,000 ODI runs faster than Gill, doing so in 57 innings.

Chasing a target of 195 runs set by Afghanistan, the Indian team started steadily with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit was run out after scoring 16 runs. Following this, Gill partnered with Ishan Kishan to form a crucial second-wicket partnership, adding 70 runs in just 43 balls.

Ishan scored 34 runs off 22 balls, hitting three fours and one six before being dismissed. However, Gill remained steadfast, leading the team to victory with an unbeaten 84 runs, including 11 fours and two sixes off 66 balls. KL Rahul also contributed with a quick 39 runs off 19 balls.

Earlier, Indian bowlers delivered an impressive performance, restricting Afghanistan to 194 runs. Debutant fast bowler Gurnoor Barar claimed three wickets for just 27 runs in 4.5 overs. Another debutant, Harsh Dubey, also took three wickets. Additionally, Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy each grabbed two wickets.

For Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a stunning innings, scoring 102 runs off 51 balls, reaching his century in just 48 balls with a strike rate of 200. He hit eight fours and eight sixes. With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
