Ranchi, August 14: Inspired by Neeraj Chopra’s historic Olympic victory, young javelin thrower Shilpa Kumari from Jharkhand has set her sights on winning an Olympic medal and becoming India’s top athlete in the sport.
Hailing from a farming family in a remote village in Gumla district, Shilpa is the current national record holder in the women’s under-17 javelin category. She emerged as one of the country’s most promising young talents after witnessing Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Shilpa watched this historic moment with villagers at a local gathering in her village.
In an interview with SAI Media, Shilpa expressed, “I saw Neeraj Chopra win gold at the Olympics. This inspired me to take up javelin. I also want to win an Olympic medal like him. When I saw my village celebrating his victory, I decided that winning an Olympic medal in javelin would be my life’s goal.”
After participating in an athletics trial at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Ranchi, Shilpa’s confidence in her abilities grew when coach Binod Singh recognized her potential in javelin.
Binod Singh stated, “When I first saw her during a trial at our SAI center three years ago, I was impressed by her talent. At that time, she was completely new. But I chose her because she showed excellent throwing skills.”
He added, “I could see potential in her, realizing she could be a great hope for the future. Once I included her in training at the SAI center in Ranchi, Shilpa performed remarkably well. She improved quickly and is now one of India’s best emerging hopes in women’s javelin.”
Singh emphasized the role of SAI in Shilpa’s development, considering her family’s financial struggles.
He noted, “Shilpa’s parents are farmers and lack the resources to support her sports career. The facilities, training, equipment, and diet provided by SAI have helped transform this rough diamond into a shining star.”
Shilpa made her mark nationally in 2025 when she set a new under-17 record by throwing 55.62 meters at the 69th National School Games.
Her attempt surpassed the previous under-18 national record of 55.19 meters set by Deepika from Haryana in 2023. However, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) did not officially recognize Shilpa’s 55.62-meter throw as the event was not sanctioned by World Athletics.
Shilpa’s official best performance came at the 2025 Junior Nationals, where she finished fifth with a throw of 45.90 meters, showcasing nearly a 10-meter improvement.
The javelin thrower stated, “As an athlete, my focus is solely on performing my best. If the federation hasn’t officially registered my throw, I will strive to do even better in my next official competition.”
Coach Singh is confident that Shilpa can surpass her unofficial records at the senior level.
The teenager remarked, “My immediate goal is to finish on the podium at the Youth Olympics. My ultimate aim is an Olympic medal, which I will dedicate to Neeraj Chopra.”
The Summer Youth Olympics will take place in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13, 2026.
