New Delhi, March 23: Serious concerns regarding violence and discrimination against students from Northeast India were raised in the Rajya Sabha. BJP MP Nabam Rebia from Arunachal Pradesh brought this issue to the floor of the house, referencing incidents that occurred in Delhi and Dehradun.
Rebia highlighted the tragic case of Nido Tania, a Delhi University student who was brutally murdered in Lajpat Nagar in 2014. He also mentioned the recent killing of another student, Angel Chakma, in Dehradun last month.
This incident has reignited discussions on the treatment of Northeast students in other parts of the country. Rebia pointed out a case of racial discrimination involving three female students from Arunachal Pradesh who were preparing for the UPSC exams in Malviya Nagar. They were insulted by being wrongly labeled as workers in a beauty parlor, despite their serious academic pursuits.
He questioned the stigma associated with working in beauty parlors, asking why such professions are viewed negatively. Rebia expressed concern over the discrimination and misconceptions surrounding the physical appearance of people from Northeast India, stating that these racial prejudices foster feelings of insecurity and isolation in society.
Following the Nido Tania case, a committee led by MP M.P. Bezbaruah submitted a report to the ministry, but Rebia demanded accountability regarding the actions taken since then. He emphasized the need for stringent laws to combat racial discrimination and proposed several key recommendations for addressing this issue.
These recommendations include incorporating detailed information about Northeast India in NCERT and CBSE textbooks, increasing the recruitment of Northeast youth in police and other services, ensuring the deployment of officials across the country, timely resolution of cases related to racial discrimination, and launching extensive campaigns to raise awareness about the Northeast region. This issue extends beyond the Northeast and calls for strict measures against any form of racial discrimination across the nation.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan also expressed empathy on the matter, stating that the house agrees with MP Nabam Rebia’s concerns.
