Washington, March 6: Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader of the U.S. Senate, stated on Thursday that “Americans do not want war” while criticizing President Donald Trump for escalating military confrontations with Iran. He accused Republican members of the Senate of supporting the President’s “military recklessness.”
Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer emphasized that the American public, regardless of political ideology, opposes the increasing military conflicts in the Middle East. He remarked, “Americans do not want war, not Republican voters, not independents, and even many of Trump’s ‘MAGA’ supporters.”
He expressed that people feel betrayed by the ongoing situation in the Middle East, and that Senate members who refuse to curb Trump’s aggressive policies are also to blame.
Schumer noted that the Senate missed an opportunity to rein in the Trump administration on Wednesday. He said, “This was a disappointing and low moment for the U.S. Senate. As war escalates daily in the Middle East, Senate Republicans stood behind Trump’s military actions, while the American public widely opposes them.”
He warned that the conflict is expanding beyond its initial scope, with reports of fighting reaching the southern Indian Ocean and drone strikes extending to Azerbaijan in the north.
The Democratic leader also accused the Trump administration of frequently changing its narrative regarding the objectives of military operations. He pointed out that listening to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and President Trump reveals a lack of a clear strategy moving forward.
Schumer indicated that the effects of this conflict are now being felt within the United States, particularly through rising fuel prices. He noted that gas prices have increased compared to a week ago, causing concern among American citizens.
