Security Tightens in Ujjain as Demolition of Mosque Structure Continues

Ujjain, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the demolition of a section of the Shahi Mosque at Chhatri Chowk continued for a second day on September 29, 2026, under heavy security. This operation follows a stone-pelting incident that occurred the previous day, prompting a significant police presence and oversight from senior administrative officials.

Authorities deployed a large number of police officers in the vicinity, leading to the closure of nearby markets as a precaution. Continuous flag marches were conducted to maintain law and order in the area.

Ujjain District Collector Roshan Kumar Singh reported that the situation remained calm and under control. “Peace and security are fully intact here, and law and order is well managed. We are present on-site and closely monitoring the situation,” he stated.

The section of the mosque being removed is part of a road expansion project in preparation for the upcoming ‘Simhasth 2028’ event.

According to district administration officials, members of the Muslim community agreed to voluntarily remove the affected structure after a meeting held on Sunday night with senior police and administrative officers, along with community representatives. The demolition began in the presence of these officials, but was temporarily halted due to a gathering of people and reports of stone-throwing directed at the police.

To disperse the crowd, police used tear gas and subsequently increased security around Chhatri Chowk. Senior officers were present to oversee the operation and ensure public order.

In response to the stone-pelting incidents, eight FIRs have been filed at the Mahakal, Kharkuwan, and Kotwali police stations, naming 20 individuals as accused. Authorities confirmed that all identified individuals related to the stone-throwing incidents have been arrested. Additionally, FIRs were filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code regarding the spread of misleading messages and videos on social media.

Police reported that Imran Khan posted a message on Instagram on September 27, calling for people to gather at Chhatri Chowk. Another video shared on the platform featured a person named Arif Pathan allegedly encouraging people to assemble near the mosque at 2 AM.

The road widening project aims to improve connectivity in crowded areas of Ujjain and facilitate the movement of pilgrims and religious processions ahead of the Simhasth 2028 event.

District Magistrate Roshan Kumar Singh urged everyone to continue cooperating, maintain peace, and refrain from believing in rumors. “The situation is being closely monitored,” he added.
