Scholars Discuss Ancient Wisdom and Modern Challenges at Varanasi Conference
The Varanasi conference explores the relevance of ancient knowledge in addressing contemporary issues like AI and green energy.

Varanasi, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : The second day of the global conference titled “Ancient Knowledge and Modern Challenges” in Varanasi brought together scholars from around the world to explore the intersection of ancient philosophy and contemporary issues. Professor Justin Tiwald from the University of Hong Kong emphasized the importance of discussions surrounding politics, social harmony, artificial intelligence, and green energy.
Professor Tiwald remarked, “I am here as both a presenter and a participant at this remarkable conference focused on the relevance of ancient knowledge in today’s world. The discussions are particularly centered on politics and social cohesion, while also addressing contemporary issues like AI and green energy.”
He highlighted the connection between governance and what can be termed as primary factors responsible for good or bad governance. “Imagine living in a period of poor governance, where the government fails to fulfill its basic responsibilities, whether in healthcare, fair distribution of resources, or other essential areas,” he said.
Manjeet Ramgotra, a senior lecturer at SOAS University in London, noted the significance of the conference in bringing discussions on ancient philosophy to a broader platform. “This conference explores how ancient knowledge can help tackle contemporary challenges. It also offers a critical perspective on modern political theories, philosophy, institutions, and democracy. It encourages us to look beyond Western knowledge and values, prompting us to explore other sources of wisdom that shape our understanding of society,” she stated.
Ramgotra expressed her enthusiasm for attending, stating, “I am truly happy to be here. Believe it or not, this is my first trip to India, and I must say it should have happened a long time ago.”
Professor Yannis Ioannidis from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens discussed the implications of AI, saying, “The decision is in our hands. AI is just like any other technology. It is a powerful tool that can influence our minds, but its use depends on us.”
Peter Macmillan, a scholar of Japanese literature, shared his insights, saying, “This is my first opportunity to participate in a conference focused on the relevance of ancient knowledge in the present and future. My life’s work has centered on researching ancient cultures and how they can guide us in living well today and in the future.”
