Ahmedabad, March 8: In the final match of the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India faced off against New Zealand. Batting first, India scored an impressive 255 runs, losing 5 wickets in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson played a crucial role, marking his third consecutive half-century in the tournament. He has now become India’s highest run scorer in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

Samson accumulated a total of 321 runs at a striking rate of 199 across five matches in the T20 World Cup 2026, surpassing the previous record held by Virat Kohli. Kohli had scored 319 runs at a strike rate of 129 during the 2014 T20 World Cup. In the final, Samson delivered a powerful performance, scoring 89 runs off 46 balls, which included 5 fours and 8 sixes.

With this innings, Samson also became the player with the highest score in a T20 World Cup final, breaking the record previously held by West Indies’ Marlon Samuels, who scored an unbeaten 85 runs in the 2016 final. Furthermore, Samson is now the third player to score half-centuries in three consecutive matches in the T20 World Cup, joining the ranks of Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi.

Samson also set a new record for the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition, hitting a total of 24 sixes. By scoring half-centuries in three consecutive innings, he matched the achievements of Kohli, Babar Azam, and KL Rahul.

Together with Abhishek Sharma, Samson provided a blazing start for India, adding 98 runs for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. Their explosive batting helped India surpass the 50-run mark in just 4 overs. During the powerplay, India scored 92 runs, setting a new record for the highest runs in a T20 World Cup powerplay.

Additionally, the Indian team now holds the record for the highest score in knockout matches of the T20 World Cup, having broken their own record set in the semi-final against England, where they scored 253 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.
