Sanjeev Goenka Expresses Confidence in Lucknow Super Giants After Opening Match Loss

Lucknow, April 2: In the opening match of the 2026 Indian Premier League, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) faced off against the Delhi Capitals at their home ground, Ekana Stadium. Unfortunately for LSG, the match ended in disappointment as they lost by six wickets. Following this defeat, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka took to social media to express his unwavering confidence in his team and captain.

Goenka stated on X, “It’s a long season, and moments like these are part of creating meaning. I have complete faith in my captain and the team to respond strongly. Thank you to our fans for your support at Ekana. We will come back stronger. The story of LSG this season is yet to be written.”

After finishing seventh in the previous IPL season, expectations were high for LSG’s performance in this match. However, the team struggled in both batting and bowling departments.

In the match, Delhi won the toss and opted to bowl first. LSG was restricted to just 141 runs in 18.4 overs. Opener Mitchell Marsh scored 35 runs, while Abdul Samad contributed 36 runs. Beyond these two, no other batsman managed to make a significant impact.

For the Delhi Capitals, T Natarajan took three wickets for 29 runs in four overs, while Lungi Ngidi claimed three wickets for 27 runs in 3.4 overs. Kuldeep Yadav and captain Axar Patel also chipped in with two and one wicket, respectively.

Chasing a target of 142 runs, Delhi lost KL Rahul on the very first ball. They quickly found themselves in trouble, losing four wickets for just 26 runs. This was a critical moment for Lucknow to seize control of the match. However, Samir Reddy and Tristan Stubbs, batting at number four, ensured that LSG had no chance of a comeback. The duo formed an unbeaten partnership of 119 runs, leading Delhi to victory by six wickets.

Samir Rizvi was the standout performer, scoring 70 runs off 47 balls, including four sixes and five fours, while Stubbs contributed an unbeaten 39 runs off 32 balls. Rizvi was named Player of the Match.
