New Delhi, August 4: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit responded on Tuesday to the results of the Bankipur by-election and the arrest related to Udayanidhi Stalin’s statement in Tamil Nadu.
Discussing the by-election results, Dikshit stated, “Local leaders can better explain the situation there. If we look at all the seats collectively, opposition to the BJP is gradually increasing. The Prime Minister’s popularity is declining, and the government’s policies are impacting the common people. Previously, elections largely depended on how they were managed. This often involved misuse of power, which sometimes led to political victories for the BJP. This created a perception that people were not as dissatisfied with the party’s economic and social policies as claimed.”
He continued, “Now, the situation is changing. If the BJP is starting to lose in its traditional strongholds, it is a significant signal. The BJP’s voter base remains relatively stable, as it is mobilized based on existing frustrations and animosities in religion and society. Meanwhile, progressive voters have often been fragmented. However, they are beginning to unite. Even in the best-case scenario, the BJP struggles to secure more than 35 to 40 percent of the vote. If the remaining 60 to 65 percent consolidates, the BJP’s downfall will be inevitable. This marks the beginning of the end for the BJP in the country.”
When asked about the statement made by opposition leader Udayanidhi Stalin in Tamil Nadu and the subsequent actions taken, Dikshit mentioned that he had not heard the statement. He added that if someone makes remarks that harm dignity, spread hatred, defame, misrepresent facts, or incite violence in society, the government should take appropriate action.
He emphasized that political debate between the ruling party and the opposition should continue, but it is essential to exercise restraint when expressing views.
