Sandeep Chaudhary: From Tragedy to Triumph, Setting World Records in Para Athletics

New Delhi, April 9: “Destinations are reached only by those whose dreams are alive; wings alone do not suffice, it is the spirit that soars.” These lines perfectly encapsulate the journey of India’s para-athlete Sandeep Chaudhary. His unwavering determination has carved a unique identity for him in the world of sports.

Sandeep was born on April 10, 1966, in Mehda Jatuvans, Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. At just 12 years old, he suffered a severe car accident that resulted in a serious injury to his left hip joint, leaving him physically challenged. Despite this setback, Sandeep refused to give up and maintained his passion for sports. Initially, he played as a goalkeeper in football, showcasing such strength that he could throw the ball halfway across the field.

Recognizing his talent, friends encouraged him to pursue javelin throw. He took their advice and decided to build a career in this sport. Since then, Sandeep has never looked back. In 2016, he delivered an outstanding performance at the Berlin Open, winning the gold medal. He also made a significant impact at the Rio Paralympics, finishing in fourth place.

Sandeep first gained widespread attention during the 2018 Asian Para Games, where he won gold with a throw of 60.01 meters. The following year, he made headlines again by not only winning gold at the World Para Athletics Championships with a throw of 66.18 meters but also setting a new world record. He represented India at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 and the Paris Olympics in 2024, finishing fourth in Paris. In 2024, he secured a bronze medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. The nation looks forward to more medals from Sandeep in the coming years. In 2020, he was also honored with the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award.’
