Samsungs QuantumBlack Technology Reduces QD-OLED Monitor Glare by 20%

Mumbai, March 29: Samsung Display has unveiled a groundbreaking film technology aimed at minimizing glare on QD-OLED monitors while enhancing panel durability. This innovative technology, named QuantumBlack, will be incorporated into all new QD-OLED monitor panels released by Samsung this year.

QD-OLED panels are known for delivering true black levels by turning off individual pixels. However, reflections from ambient light can diminish perceived contrast in real-world settings. QuantumBlack seeks to overcome this challenge by reducing light reflectance by 20 percent compared to Samsung Display’s previous film. This improvement is expected to enhance visibility in darker scenes, especially in brightly lit environments.

This development has significant implications for gaming monitors, where contrast and shadow details are paramount. Reduced reflections can help maintain clearer distinctions between objects and backgrounds, potentially enhancing visibility in darker areas of games, particularly in first-person shooters and survival genres.

In addition to optical enhancements, Samsung Display claims that the new film also boosts panel durability. Internal tests show that surface hardness has increased from 2H to 3H. A higher hardness rating typically indicates better resistance to scratches from everyday use, including cleaning and incidental contact.

The launch of QuantumBlack comes as display manufacturers strive to refine QD-OLED technology beyond basic image quality. Several monitor brands have introduced similar anti-reflection technologies under various names. ASUS calls its version Black Shield, while Gigabyte and MSI refer to theirs as Obsidian Shield and Dark Armor, respectively, to emphasize reduced reflectivity in their latest offerings.

According to data from Omdia, the global self-emissive monitor market is expected to grow from 3.4 million units in 2025 to 7.6 million units by 2030. Currently, Samsung Display leads this segment with a commanding 75 percent market share.
