Over 80% of South Korean Youth Concerned About AI-Related Online Harassment

Seoul, March 30: The growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) is accompanied by increasing concerns about its associated risks. A recent survey conducted in South Korea revealed that over 80% of teenagers and young adults are worried about online harassment linked to AI misuse, including the creation of deepfake videos and the spread of misinformation.

The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) conducted this survey between September and November last year. According to the findings, 89.4% of teenagers acknowledged the severity of cyber violence stemming from AI, while 87.6% of young adults shared this sentiment.

As reported by the Yonhap News Agency, the survey included 9,296 students from elementary school (fourth grade) to high school (third year) and 7,521 adults aged 19 to 69. Respondents expressed that the ease of content creation using AI tools was their primary concern, while adults feared the repeated harm caused by AI-generated materials.

The survey also found that in 2025, 42.3% of teenagers experienced some form of cyber harassment, a slight decrease of 0.5% from the previous year. For adults, the figure stood at 15.8%, which is an increase of 2.3% during the same period.

Teenagers reported encountering cyber harassment mainly through text messages and online gaming platforms, while adults experienced it primarily via text messages or social media. Both groups identified strangers as the most common perpetrators of online harassment, followed by friends.

KMCC Chairman Kim Jong-chul stated, “Cyber harassment is not just an online ethical issue; it can damage individuals’ dignity and violate the right to happiness enshrined in the constitution.” He emphasized that the government will work to promote the responsible use of digital platforms.
