Chinas IoT Industry Projected to Exceed 3.5 Trillion Yuan by 2028

Beijing, March 31: On March 31, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with eight other departments, unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at promoting the innovative development of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry for the years 2026 to 2028. The plan proposes the establishment and revision of over 50 advanced and applicable standards by 2028. It aims to develop ten application areas with connections reaching the level of 100 million and 15 application areas with connections in the millions. The goal is to achieve a total of ten billion IoT terminal connections, with the core IoT industry expected to surpass 3.5 trillion yuan.

The IoT is based on sensing technology, enabling intelligent connectivity among people, machines, and objects through communication networks, thus bridging the digital and physical worlds. The IoT industry primarily encompasses sensing, networking, platforms, applications, and security.

The action plan outlines five key steps to enhance the innovative development of the IoT industry: promoting innovation and upgrading of IoT devices, improving service efficiency of IoT platforms, developing IoT application scenarios, strengthening the foundation of IoT networks, and building an ecosystem for IoT industry development.

These initiatives aim to further integrate IoT technology into production, consumption, and social governance, fostering a deeper integration of the digital economy with the real economy and aiding in the development of new productive forces.

Additionally, the plan states that by 2028, new IoT technologies, products, and models will continuously emerge, leading to a sustained increase in the industry’s innovation capacity. Significant achievements are expected in key technologies such as sensing, networking and communication, data processing, and security, along with notable improvements in the intelligence levels of terminals and platforms.
