S. Jaishankar Highlights Global Economic Security and Maritime Freedom at G7 Meeting

New Delhi, March 27: At the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in France, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar engaged with his counterparts to discuss pressing global issues. The importance of maritime freedom for global economic stability was a key focus during the discussions.

Concerns were raised regarding the increasing links between narco-terrorism and its associated challenges. The meeting also appreciated efforts to strengthen supply chains for critical minerals, deemed essential for global development.

Dr. Jaishankar shared insights on the meeting via a post on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Today at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, we discussed various threats and sovereignty. Emphasized the importance of maritime freedom for global economic security, while also highlighting the dangers posed by the nexus of narco-terrorism. I appreciated the current steps being taken to enhance cooperation in the value chain of critical minerals.”

Dr. Jaishankar arrived in France on Thursday for the two-day G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. During his visit, he met with counterparts from South Korea, Canada, and Japan. In the discussions, he and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand focused on advancing bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East.

He underscored the significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) in strengthening global connectivity amid ongoing geopolitical tensions during the G7 meeting.

He noted that the conflict in the Middle East has heightened the need for robust trade routes and secure supply chains. Addressing the session, Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that India’s growing trade agreements with major global partners, including the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the United Kingdom, have significantly added value to the IMEEC.

During the meeting, Minister Jaishankar also acknowledged the increasing enthusiasm among international partners to complete connectivity initiatives. He stressed the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and highlighted the challenges faced by the Global South.

He stated, “There is a need for UNSC reforms, to facilitate peacekeeping missions and strengthen humanitarian supply chains. Particularly, concerns regarding energy challenges, food supply, and food security for the Global South were raised.”
