New York, April 28: Russia has openly backed Iran’s rights concerning the Strait of Hormuz. At the United Nations, Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia stated that Iran has full authority to control traffic in this crucial maritime route under current circumstances.
Speaking at the UN Security Council, Nebenzia accused Western nations of double standards. He claimed that there is an attempt to place full responsibility on Iran, as if it were the one attacking its neighbors, while the reality is much more complex.
According to Nebenzia, in times of war, any coastal nation can limit navigation in its territorial waters for security reasons. He explained that such measures can be deemed legitimate under international law when necessary for safety.
The Russian ambassador sharply criticized Western nations, labeling them as “modern-day pirates.” He alleged that these countries attempt to conceal their “illegal actions” through unilateral sanctions and pressure tactics.
Nebenzia also criticized European nations supporting Ukrainian attacks on Russian commercial vessels in the Black Sea. He stated that this stance contradicts international regulations and poses a threat to global maritime security.
These statements come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, where the security of the Strait of Hormuz remains vital for global energy supplies.
This announcement coincided with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin. During this meeting, Moscow reaffirmed its commitment to standing with Iran and pledged to continue efforts to establish peace in the Middle East.
