Russia and Iran Discuss Key Issues in Recent Diplomatic Talks

Moscow, May 2: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov engaged in a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. The discussion focused on navigation freedom in the Strait of Hormuz and issues related to Iran’s nuclear program, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to the ministry, both leaders extensively discussed the complete cessation of hostilities in West Asia, stabilizing the military and political situation, and the prospects for restoring peace in the region. Russia reiterated its support for ongoing mediation efforts and expressed commitment to cooperating in diplomatic processes aimed at establishing long-term peace.

During the talks, the safe passage of Russian vessels and cargo through the Strait of Hormuz was also addressed, highlighting its significance for global energy supply.

Previously, on April 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi in Saint Petersburg. This meeting covered bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran and the situation in West Asia.

Attending the meeting from the Russian side were Foreign Minister Lavrov, Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, and Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. The Iranian delegation included Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali.

During the meeting, President Putin emphasized Moscow’s commitment to advancing strategic relations with Iran and collaborating in efforts to establish peace in West Asia. According to Russian media, Putin expressed hope that Iran would overcome current challenges and move towards stability and peace.

He stated, “We will make every effort that serves your interests and those of all people in the region, to establish peace as soon as possible.” He also mentioned receiving a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, which he referenced at the beginning of the conversation.
