Rubio Defends 60-Day Waiver on Russian Oil, Highlights Indias Energy Dependence

Marco Rubio emphasizes Indias reliance on Russian oil while defending a 60-day waiver on sanctions against Russia.

Washington, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : In Washington, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio defended President Donald Trump’s decision to grant a 60-day waiver on sanctions related to Russia. He stated that India remains a crucial partner for the United States and continues to rely heavily on Russian oil for its energy needs. Implementing tariffs and sanctions simultaneously could have severe repercussions for the global economy, he warned.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Rubio noted that the U.S. requires time to assess the broader economic impacts of these measures, especially given the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine that are already affecting global energy supplies.

Rubio’s remarks came in response to criticism from Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who labeled the 60-day waiver a mistake that would benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rubio countered, stating, “The issue is not just about sanctions on Russia. It also involves tariffs imposed on several countries, including India.” He explained that President Trump wants to use this 60-day period to understand the potential consequences of enforcing both tariffs and sanctions at once.

While acknowledging India’s efforts to diversify its energy sources, Rubio emphasized that halting energy imports from Russia overnight is not feasible. He said, “Countries like India have voluntarily sought to change their energy sources, but they still purchase significant amounts of energy from Russia. This is because it is not possible to change the entire system in just one day. Additionally, India is an important friend and partner of the United States.”

Rubio also mentioned that the U.S. administration is closely monitoring various events impacting the international energy market, including the conflict with Iran, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, and damage to energy infrastructure during the Russia-Ukraine war.

He pointed out that these events have increased pressure on global energy prices, complicating the decision to implement sanctions. The 60-day waiver was granted to allow the government to study the potential impacts of this legislation thoroughly. Rubio stressed the need for the president to understand the right balance and the best course of action in these circumstances.

When asked if the waiver and other arrangements related to Russian diesel would provide relief to Putin, Rubio denied this, asserting that “that diesel was going to be sold in the international market one way or another.” He recalled that the U.S. had previously granted a similar 60-day waiver when oil transport through the Strait of Hormuz faced disruptions.

Rubio noted that conflicts around the world are increasingly affecting one another, impacting not just the countries at war but also the global economy as a whole. He acknowledged that Americans are feeling the pinch of rising energy prices, but stressed that the situation is even more challenging for other nations.

His recent statements illustrate the challenge facing the U.S.: maintaining pressure on Russia while managing economic relations with major energy-importing countries like India. Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, Russian crude oil has become a significant part of India’s imports, as the country continues to prioritize its energy needs, affordability, and security.
