Rubio Addresses Satellite Internet Disruptions in Ukraine, Denies Intentional Restrictions
Senator Marco Rubio clarifies the status of satellite internet services in Ukraine amid concerns over disruptions affecting military operations.

Washington, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : Senator Marco Rubio recently addressed concerns regarding satellite internet services in Ukraine, denying any intentional restrictions by the Trump administration. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews, he acknowledged that Ukraine is seeking access to a distinct military communication system for conducting operations deep within Russian territory.
Rubio clarified the difference between Starlink, a commercial satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and Starshield, a separate system designed for military use. His comments come amid rising worries in Ukraine that certain restrictions may have impacted high-speed drone connectivity, crucial for military operations and protection against Russian airstrikes.
He stated, “No one in the White House ordered a slowdown of internet services to prevent specific drones from operating.” Rubio emphasized that the disruptions were not a result of administrative orders and indicated that service has been restored to its previous state.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously expressed concerns about restrictions affecting satellite-linked drone operations, especially as Russia continues to target Ukraine’s infrastructure. Rubio dismissed claims that the U.S. had intervened in the service.
He reiterated that Starlink and Starshield should not be viewed as the same, as they operate under different frameworks. “Starlink is a commercial service while Starshield is designed for defense and military use,” he explained.
According to Rubio, discussions are ongoing regarding providing Ukraine access to Starshield, which the U.S. military currently utilizes. Ukraine has specifically requested access to this military system for strikes within Russian territory.
Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of nine U.S. senators has urged the Department of Defense’s inspector general to investigate the disruptions in satellite communication services for Ukrainian forces. Lawmakers are concerned that such incidents could pose risks to U.S. diplomats, military personnel, and security officials. They seek to determine whether these restrictions were approved by U.S. authorities or if they had prior knowledge of them.
Rubio reiterated that reports concerning the White House’s involvement are incorrect, stating, “I saw such reports a few days ago. They are completely wrong.” He confirmed that, according to the administration, commercial satellite services are functioning normally again.
However, amidst these conflicting claims, many questions remain. It is still unclear what caused the technical disruptions, their impact on military operations, and whether all affected services have been fully restored.
