Violent Protests Erupt Across France Amid Rising Costs and Student Demands

Protests in France led to violence and over 400 arrests as citizens demand action against rising inflation and support for student issues.

Paris, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across France on Saturday, October 18, in response to rising inflation and student demands. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that approximately 550,000 people participated in the protests nationwide, which turned violent in several cities.

Nunez condemned the violence that erupted during the demonstrations, stating that around 400 individuals had been arrested. Additionally, 60 members of internal security forces sustained injuries amidst the chaos.

Participants included farmers, climate activists, trade union members, and students, all voicing their concerns over fuel prices, increasing living costs, education, and public services. Reports indicated that many public buildings, police stations, and businesses were targeted during the unrest. Attempts were made to breach city halls in Marseille, Lille, Calais, and Angers, while administrative offices in Bordeaux were also attacked.

Nunez noted that some individuals took advantage of the protests to loot stores in various cities. The unrest had a significant impact on public transport, with Paris’ RATP announcing temporary suspensions of services on more than ten metro lines and the closure of several stations.

The Louvre Museum limited visitor numbers on Saturday, while the Orangerie Museum only allowed entry to those with prior bookings. President Emmanuel Macron stated that there is no place for violence, emphasizing that those responsible for vandalism and attacks on government offices would face legal consequences. He expressed support for law enforcement agencies, asserting the need for unity against those seeking to disrupt public order and undermine institutions.

Tensions remain high as the protests highlight the growing discontent among citizens regarding economic challenges and social issues.
