Rohit Sharma Envisions India as the Powerhouse of World Cricket

Mumbai, May 25: Former Indian captain and T20 World Cup winner Rohit Sharma, who has dedicated nearly two decades to the national team, expressed his belief that Indian cricket is on a strong upward trajectory. He shared his ambition for India to become the undisputed powerhouse of world cricket.

During the Mumbai Indians’ ESA Day event, Rohit reflected on India’s impressive success across various formats and tournaments in recent years. He attributed this achievement to the country’s evolving cricketing structure, which has fostered consistent performances on the global stage.

“I want India to be the powerhouse of world cricket… that is the bottom line. I want India to be the best, and cricket is right up there. What we have accomplished in the last three years has been superb to watch. From the 2024 World Cup to the Women’s World Cup, U19 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, and another T20 World Cup, I hope we continue our winning streak,” Rohit stated.

He also discussed the evolution of the game since the start of his international career, particularly in white-ball cricket, where batting strategies have become increasingly aggressive.

“When we started, a score of 130-140 was considered good, but now it’s challenging to feel secure with any score. This evolution illustrates how the game has changed over the years,” he explained.

According to the former MI captain, the fearlessness exhibited by modern cricketers has propelled the sport to new heights.

“Players have become more fearless and open-minded about how they approach the game, which is a positive sign for the sport and the league. They are not afraid to take risks instead of playing conservatively. This trend will continue, leading to even greater achievements in the future,” he expressed.

While discussing the upcoming generation of cricketers, Rohit emphasized the importance of allowing young players to enjoy the game without imposing heavy expectations too early.

“It varies by age. I know kids from six to eighteen years old. You don’t want to put too much pressure on them at such a young age. They should enjoy the sport, play with friends, and watch the game. That’s how it all started for me. The situation will dictate what’s important at any given time. Enjoy the sport you want to play; no one can force you to do something,” the ODI opener advised.

In other news, Rohit has been declared fully fit ahead of Mumbai Indians’ final IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium. After dealing with injury setbacks this season, he is now “100% fit.”

Despite participating in only eight matches, Rohit has made a significant impact, scoring 283 runs at an impressive average of 40.42 and a strike rate of 160.70. His standout performances this season include a remarkable 84 off 44 balls against Lucknow Super Giants and a stunning 78 off just 38 deliveries against Kolkata Knight Riders.
