Mumbai, March 30: The IPL 2026 season kicked off with a thrilling victory for the Mumbai Indians. On Sunday, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets. Rohit Sharma showcased his exceptional batting skills, scoring a powerful 78 runs. In doing so, he broke a significant record previously held by Virat Kohli.
Rohit has now become the highest run-scorer against a single team in IPL history. He has amassed 1,161 runs against KKR, surpassing Kohli, who scored 1,159 runs against the Punjab Kings. Additionally, Rohit has set the record for the most runs scored against Kolkata in IPL, overtaking former captain David Warner, who had 1,093 runs against KKR.
Rohit appeared to be in excellent form against KKR. Alongside Ryan Rickelton, he forged a remarkable partnership, putting together 148 runs for the first wicket in just 11.5 overs. Rohit faced 38 balls, hitting 6 fours and 6 sixes during his innings. Rickelton also contributed significantly, scoring 81 runs off 43 balls at a strike rate of 188. Thanks to their stellar performance, the Mumbai Indians chased down KKR’s target of 221 runs in 19.1 overs, marking the highest successful chase in IPL history for Mumbai. Previously, they had achieved a successful chase of 221 runs against the Chennai Super Kings in 2021.
Earlier, after losing the toss, the Kolkata Knight Riders batted first, scoring 220 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Captain Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with a top score of 67 runs off 40 balls. Finn Allen made a quickfire 37 runs off just 17 balls, while Ankur Raghuwanshi contributed 51 runs off 29 balls. Rinku Singh added an unbeaten 33 runs from 21 balls.
