Amman, July 19: Sirens were reported in several areas of Jordan on Sunday, according to the Jordan Radio and Television Corporation. The state broadcaster shared this information via the social media platform ‘X’.
Reports indicate that multiple media outlets, citing the Israeli military, reported that missiles launched from Iran were detected heading towards Aqaba, Jordan’s southern coastal city. Both Israeli and Jordanian forces successfully intercepted these missiles mid-flight.
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a security alert, stating that the airport and port in Aqaba were evacuated due to a “specific and credible threat.” The embassy urged American citizens to avoid traveling to these locations until further notice.
The U.S. Embassy also reiterated its warning for citizens to stay away from military installations in Jordan. However, Jordanian officials later dismissed the embassy’s claims, asserting that both the airport and port were operating normally.
Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs, Mohammad Al Momani, stated that no decision had been made to evacuate the airport or port. He emphasized that Jordanian authorities would issue alerts according to established procedures, which may include activating emergency sirens when necessary.
These events unfold amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The U.S. and Iran have engaged in multiple rounds of attacks. The U.S. has conducted strikes on Iranian positions eight times, while Iran has targeted American facilities in Gulf countries.
On Saturday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have attacked a U.S. military base in Jordan, targeted a fuel supply center in Kuwait, and destroyed a data center in Bahrain, according to Iranian state media.
According to the Iranian news agency Sepah, the IRGC’s aerospace force targeted fighter jet bases and a large parking area at the U.S. base in Al-Azraq, Jordan. They claimed that at least two fighter jets and three American aircraft were destroyed or sustained significant damage in the missile and drone strikes.
