New Delhi, April 14: Bihar is set to learn about its new Chief Minister today. Nitish Kumar, who has held the position for 20 years, will convene a cabinet meeting at 11 AM. Important decisions are anticipated during this session. Following the cabinet meeting, he will attend a gathering of the Janata Dal (United) legislative party. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will also hold a meeting of its legislative members. After these discussions, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to submit his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain.
The BJP has yet to officially announce its candidate for the next Chief Minister, but Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is considered a strong contender. His prominence stems from his significant role in the Home Ministry within the outgoing government. Chaudhary, who belongs to the influential OBC community and the Koiri caste, was appointed as the state party president in 2023 and became Deputy Chief Minister a year later.
Another name gaining attention is Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar. While there is support for Nishant within the JD(U), the BJP is seen as the primary contender this time.
Recent public opinion polls conducted by various media outlets indicate a close race between Samrat Chaudhary and Nishant Kumar in terms of public preference. The surveys also highlighted widespread social expectations, with nearly half of the respondents expressing a desire for a Chief Minister from the OBC category, including both Chaudhary and Nishant. This comes despite many wanting Nitish Kumar to continue as Chief Minister until 2030, making his sudden resignation a surprise for many.
On the ground, preparations for the power transition are already visible. Posters of Nitish Kumar have begun to be removed from the JD(U) office in Patna, signaling the end of an era.
In the meantime, all 202 legislators from the ruling coalition have been instructed to remain in the state capital until Wednesday. Reports suggest that Nitish Kumar has also started vacating his official residence on Circular Road.
To ensure a smooth process, the BJP’s top leadership has appointed Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the central observer. Chouhan is expected to arrive in Patna on Tuesday, accompanied by Nitin Nabin, to participate in the meeting that will finalize the name of the Chief Minister candidate.
