Rising Conflict in the Middle East Highlights Failures of International Order, Says Canadian PM

Washington, March 4: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the escalating conflict in the Middle East underscores the failures of the international order. He emphasized that decades of diplomacy and sanctions have not succeeded in curbing Iran’s nuclear program.

During a press conference in Sydney, Australia, Carney remarked that the current crisis reveals the struggles of global institutions to contain Iran, despite years of negotiations and international pressure.

Carney expressed regret over the situation, labeling it another example of the international system’s shortcomings. He noted that efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions have not yielded the desired results over the years.

According to Carney, several resolutions have been passed by the United Nations Security Council, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has maintained continuous oversight. Despite various sanctions and diplomatic initiatives, the nuclear threat from Iran persists.

He reiterated that Canada has long viewed Iran as a primary source of instability in the Middle East. Carney pointed out that the Iranian government and associated groups have caused significant harm and suffering in the region, resulting in hundreds of deaths, including Canadian citizens, and distress for millions across multiple areas.

Carney affirmed Canada’s support for efforts aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He stated, “We support efforts to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to prevent its government from becoming a further threat to international peace and security.”

He also expressed concern over the recent tensions, noting that the United States and Israel acted without consulting the United Nations or their allies, including Canada.

Carney stressed that all parties involved in the conflict must adhere to international law. He stated, “Canada reaffirms that international law is essential for all nations.”

He condemned Iran’s attacks on civilian targets in the region, saying, “We condemn Iran’s attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Middle East.” He urged all parties to exercise restraint, calling on the U.S., Israel, and others to respect the rules of international dialogue. Canada advocates for a rapid de-escalation of hostilities and is prepared to assist in achieving this goal.

He emphasized that diplomacy is the only viable path to resolve this crisis. “Diplomatic dialogue is necessary to avoid a larger and deeper conflict. Innocent civilians must be protected, and all parties should remain committed to solid agreements to eliminate both nuclear proliferation and terrorist extremism.”

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following recent military strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, leading to retaliatory actions in the region. This has raised concerns regarding global security and energy markets.
