Kolkata, March 22: A retired soldier from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Tarak Saha, has decided to enter the electoral fray in West Bengal. This seat is reserved for Scheduled Castes and is considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Tarak Saha, who served as a Rifleman (General Duty) in the TSR, took voluntary retirement in 2019. He is now contesting as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Swarupnagar (SC) assembly seat in North 24 Parganas district.
The competition for this seat has become quite intriguing, with Tarak Saha facing off against Bishwajit Mandal from the CPI(M)-led Left Front and Bina Mandal from the TMC.
In the previous elections, TMC’s Bina Mandal won this seat by defeating BJP’s Brindaban Sarkar by a margin of 34,772 votes in the 2021 elections.
In a conversation with the media, Tarak Saha stated, “The party has entrusted me with the significant responsibility of developing Swarupnagar. I will strive to live up to this trust with utmost sincerity. I am 200 percent confident of my victory. I will win and bring freedom to Swarupnagar.”
He alleged that there has been little significant development in the region during the 15 years of TMC rule, leaving the area still quite backward.
Tarak Saha mentioned, “Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a bridge. Swarupnagar is an agriculture-centric area, and if railway connectivity improves here, farmers will receive better prices for their produce. Union Minister Shantanu Thakur will surely assist in this direction.”
According to a senior officer from TSR, Tarak Saha was recruited in 1998 as a Rifleman (General Duty) in the 6th Battalion of TSR. After completing his training, he was deployed in the 2nd Battalion located in Radha Kishore Nagar, West Tripura, where he served until July 2019.
Voting for the Swarupnagar (SC) seat will take place in the second phase on April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
