Moscow, March 22: British media reports indicate that a nuclear-powered Royal Navy submarine has arrived in the Arabian Sea, capable of launching cruise missile strikes against Iran.
According to the Daily Mail, the submarine, HMS Anson, is equipped with Tomahawk Block IV land-attack missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, and is believed to be operating in the deep waters of the northern Arabian Sea.
This deployment suggests that the British military is prepared to strike Iran if hostilities escalate.
As reported by the Xinhua news agency, HMS Anson could receive orders to fire if granted permission by the Prime Minister, launching four missiles from a low altitude.
A statement from Downing Street confirmed that on Friday, the UK agreed to allow the United States to use British bases to target missile sites and capabilities employed by Iran to attack vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement emphasized that the UK is collaborating with international partners to ensure the safety of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. However, it also stressed that Britain does not wish to engage in a major conflict.
Xinhua reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned his British counterpart, Yvette Cooper, against any assistance to the US and Israel in their attacks on Iran, stating that such actions would only escalate tensions.
Zarif later expressed on the social media platform X that most British citizens do not want to be involved in a conflict favored by Israel and the US against Iran. He criticized British leadership for risking the lives of its citizens by permitting the use of British bases for attacks against Iran, asserting that Iran would exercise its right to self-defense.
The UK has countered this by warning Iran against targeting “British bases, territories, or interests,” highlighting the risks of further escalating tensions.
Recently, Iran launched two ballistic missiles towards Diego Garcia, a strategic US-UK base in the Indian Ocean, which has heightened tensions. Notably, neither missile hit its target; one reportedly failed mid-flight, while the other was intercepted by US naval forces. It remains unclear whether the latter was successfully destroyed.
This attempted strike has raised concerns about Iran’s missile capabilities, as Diego Garcia is approximately 4,000 kilometers from Iranian territory, indicating a greater range than previously estimated.
The base plays a crucial role in regional security, housing US bombers, nuclear submarines, and guided-missile destroyers.
