ECI Mandates Minimum Facilities and Voter Assistance at Polling Stations for 2026 Assembly Elections

New Delhi, March 22: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued directives to the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of election-bound states and Union Territories. They are required to ensure minimum facilities and voter assistance at 218,807 polling stations. On March 15, the ECI announced the dates for the general elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with by-elections in six states.

According to the ECI, the minimum facilities include drinking water, waiting areas, toilets, lighting, accessible ramps for disabled voters, standard voting compartments, and appropriate signage. The CEOs have also been instructed to arrange seating for voters waiting in line, allowing them to sit while they wait for their turn.

To enhance voter awareness, the ECI will install four uniform and standard Voter Facilitation Posters (VFP) at all polling stations. These posters will provide details about the polling station, a list of candidates, dos and don’ts, valid identification documents, and information about the voting process.

The ECI has stated that Voter Assistance Booths (VAB) will be established at every polling station. Here, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) or other staff will assist voters in locating their polling stations and finding their serial numbers on the voter list. These booths will be clearly marked with visible signage.

Additionally, to facilitate voters, a mobile phone deposit service will be available outside the polling station entrance. Voters can deposit their switched-off mobile phones with designated volunteers and retrieve them after voting.

The ECI has emphasized that the provision of minimum facilities and other measures is mandatory and will be strictly monitored at all polling stations. All relevant officials have been instructed to complete preparations before the voting dates to ensure a smooth and pleasant voting experience for all voters.
