New Delhi, March 22: The Congress Party has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in two Karnataka assembly constituencies: Bagalkot and Davanagere South. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the proposals for these candidates.
For the Bagalkot assembly seat, Umesh Meti, the younger son of the late H.Y. Meti, has been nominated. Meanwhile, in Davanagere South, the party has chosen Samarth Mallikarjun, the grandson of the late Shamanur Shivshankarappa. This decision has also resolved the uncertainty surrounding the ticket allocations. The official announcement was made on Sunday by Congress National Secretary Venugopal.
The need for by-elections arose following the deaths of Shamanur Shivshankarappa and H.Y. Meti, the sitting legislators from Davanagere South and Bagalkot, respectively. The Congress has considered sympathy as a key factor in awarding tickets to members of these families.
Following the announcement, both Samarth Mallikarjun and Umesh Meti plan to file their nominations on Monday, accompanied by a large number of supporters.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also declared its candidates for the by-elections. Veerabhadrayya Charantimath will contest from Bagalkot, while Srinivas T. Das Kariyappa will represent the party in Davanagere South. The BJP candidates have already submitted their nomination papers.
Voting for the by-elections in Karnataka’s Bagalkot and Davanagere South constituencies is scheduled for April 9. The last date for filing nomination papers is March 23, with scrutiny set for March 24. The results of the by-elections will be announced on May 4.
In the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections, Congress secured victories in both constituencies. Shamanur Shivshankarappa won Davanagere South by a margin of 24,472 votes, while H.Y. Meti triumphed in Bagalkot by 5,878 votes.
