Bharathiraja was celebrated for portraying the authentic life of rural communities with beauty and truth in his films. His works prominently featured rural culture, relationships, and social issues.

Regarded as a trendsetter in Tamil cinema, the phrase he often used at the beginning of his films, “En iniya Tamil makkal…” remains popular among the people of Tamil Nadu. He was also known for recognizing new talent, giving many prominent figures in Tamil cinema their first break.

His debut film, “16 Vayathinile,” revolutionized Tamil cinema and featured stars like Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, and Sridevi. For this film, he received the Best Director award from the Tamil Nadu government.

Born on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram village in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja was the son of Periya Mayathevar and Meenakshi Ammal. Originally named Chinnasamy, he became widely known as Bharathiraja. Coming from a humble background, he carved out a distinct identity in the film industry through sheer determination.

Throughout his career, he directed nearly 44 films, many of which are considered classics today. Notable works include “Mudhal Mariyadhai,” “Man Vasanai,” “Pudhumai Penn,” “Vedam Pudithu,” “Kizhakku Cheemaiyile,” “Karuthamma,” and “Nadodi Thendral.”

In addition to directing, Bharathiraja was also a talented actor. He made his acting debut in the film “Kallukkul Eeram” and later appeared in several films, including “Nizhalgal,” “Dhavani Kanavugal,” “Idhayam,” “Ayudha Ezhuthu,” “Pandia Nadu,” “Seethakadhi,” “Manadu,” “Eshwaran,” and “Thiruchitrambalam.”

Following his passing, many celebrities from the film industry have paid tribute to him. Actress Khushbu Sundar expressed her condolences on social media, stating, “Bharathiraja’s departure is a significant loss for Tamil cinema. His films are a true school of filmmaking, and future generations will continue to learn from them. He often spoke of making a film with me, but now that dream remains unfulfilled.”
