Remembering the Wayanad Tragedy: Two Years Later, Survivors Honor Their Lost Loved Ones

Wayanad, July 30: Two years have passed since the devastating natural disaster struck Wayanad, Kerala. The calamity obliterated the hillside villages of Chooralamala and Mundakkai. Even after two years, the shadow of grief looms over the survivors.

On July 30, 2024, a landslide officially claimed the lives of 330 individuals, including 32 who were initially reported missing but later declared dead. The swift currents of mud, stones, and floodwaters erased entire settlements. Hundreds were left homeless, forever altering the landscape of Wayanad.

On the second anniversary of the tragedy, survivors gathered at the disaster site and the newly established rehabilitation township. They prayed, lit candles, and remembered those who never returned.

For many, the pain remains fresh. Some never had the chance to bid farewell to their loved ones. The sound of dark clouds or heavy rain still sends shivers down the spines of those who experienced that terrifying night.

Life is gradually returning to normal for these individuals. Laughter of children now echoes in the streets of the rehabilitation township, a stark contrast to the silence that prevailed two years ago. Among them is little Ritu, born shortly after her pregnant mother, Sindhu, narrowly escaped the landslide. Their new home stands as a symbol of hope born from tragedy.

Similar stories are emerging throughout the township, where displaced families are slowly overcoming their hardships and striving to rebuild their lives.

On this poignant anniversary, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tribute to the victims through a social media post.

In her post on X, she wrote, “Two years have passed since the tragedy that devastated the people of Chooralamala and Mundakkai. We salute the courage and resilience of the people of Wayanad. In memory and honor of those who left us, we will continue to support the survivors in every possible way. We reaffirm our commitment to stand with them in their courageous fight to rebuild their lives, as they carry the deep sorrow of losing their loved ones in their hearts.”
