Remembering Sudama Pandey: A Voice of Hindi Poetry

New Delhi, February 10: February 10 marks the remembrance of a powerful and extraordinary voice in Hindi poetry, Sudama Pandey, who passed away at the young age of 39 due to a brain tumor. Despite his brief life, he infused Hindi poetry with a distinct tone, language, and vision, earning him a place among the most influential poets of the 1970s.

The emergence of Dhumil in the realm of 1970s poetry is considered a significant event. He appeared as a true laborer-farmer in the field of poetry, equipped with tools during a transitional phase between new poetry and anti-poetry. His verses confront the system, politics, and social structures head-on. Dhumil himself noted that the grammar of words and weapons differs; words are effective among allies, while weapons are meant for adversaries.

His anger was not merely emotional or fleeting. It represented the fury of an entire generation, class, and era, centered on a profound desire for liberation from exploitation. This is why his voice resonates distinctly from the ‘angry’ or ‘hungry generation’ of his time, showcasing a more ideological perspective. His poem reflects this sentiment: “One man kneads dough, another eats bread, and a third man exists, who neither kneads nor eats, but only plays with bread. I ask, who is this third man? My country’s parliament remains silent.”

‘Dhumil’ was his chosen pen name; his birth name was Sudama Pandey. He was born on November 9, 1936, in a village near Varanasi to a humble farming family. The family’s livelihood depended on agriculture and a small shop. He received his early education in the village and married at the age of thirteen. Following his father’s death during his youth, he bore the family’s responsibilities. He worked in a steel factory in Kolkata, then took a job with a trading company, and later became an instructor after earning an electrical diploma from ITI.

The chaos and sharp discontent reflected in his poetry stemmed from the socio-political climate of his time, influenced by the Naxalbari movement and the consciousness of the lower middle class. The lack of higher education and broader exposure limited his perspectives, yet this grounded his poetry in reality.

Dhumil’s greatest strength lay in his poetic language. He utilized common words effectively, creating a style that was simple, fluid, and direct. His poems feature striking and fresh imagery that leaves a deep impact on readers. The recurring generalizations in his work create a dramatic tension. He expressed the disillusionment following the country’s independence with remarkable intensity. His poetry challenges the moralities and decencies exploited by power for its protection, consistently addressing themes of ordinary people’s lives, struggles, humiliation, and resistance.

During his lifetime, only one poetry collection, “From Parliament to the Streets” (1972), was published. After his death, two more significant collections emerged: “Listen to Me Tomorrow” (1977) and “The Democracy of Sudama Pandey” (1984). In addition to poetry, he contributed to prose, with seven stories and over a dozen essays published in various journals. His diaries, letters, and memoirs are considered vital sources for understanding his personality and creative process. He also showcased his talent in translation and playwriting.

For the poetry collection “Listen to Me Tomorrow,” published posthumously, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1979. Dhumil represents a voice in Hindi poetry that connected poetry to the harsh realities of life, moving it away from intellectual discourse. He transformed words into tools for societal engagement rather than weapons. Today, when discussing issues of systems, inequality, and the struggles of the common man, Dhumil’s poetry remains as relevant and alive as ever.
