Remembering Sobhan Babu: The Romantic Star of South Indian Cinema

Mumbai, March 19: In the realm of Indian cinema, many legendary artists have left their mark. Among them, a star from South Indian cinema captivated audiences for decades, teaching them about romance while evoking deep emotions through action and devotion. We are talking about the versatile actor, Sobhan Babu. His exceptional talent earned him the Best Actor award five times.

Born in Chinna Nandigama, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Sobhan Babu passed away on March 20, 2008. For four decades, he ruled South Indian cinema and was considered one of the top four Telugu stars at the peak of his career. He was renowned for his romantic roles, having starred in numerous romantic films, yet he never performed kissing scenes. Sobhan Babu adhered to a strict no-kissing policy due to his family values and personal rules.

Sobhan Babu began his career in 1959 with “Deva Balam,” but it was the 1960 film “Bhakta Sabari” that brought him success through his acting prowess. He appeared in over 200 films, entertaining audiences with titles like “Devata,” “Soggadu,” “Gorintaku,” “Jeevana Tarangalu,” “Manchi Manushulu,” “Karthik Deepam,” “Jeevana Jyoti,” and “Jeevana Poratam.” His film “Manchi Manushulu,” a remake of “Aa Gale Lag Ja,” performed exceptionally well at the box office, becoming the hit film of the year in 1973.

While he taught romance on screen, Sobhan Babu was a reserved individual in real life. He kept his family and children away from the glitz and glamour of the film industry.

Few are aware that after working in films for 5-6 years, Sobhan Babu contemplated leaving cinema. However, the release of the 1965 film “Veerabhimanyu” changed his life. The film became a blockbuster, establishing him as a major actor in the industry. Based on the life of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna from the Mahabharata, the film beautifully blended devotion and courage, earning immense love from the audience.
