New Delhi, September 26 (Udaipur Kiran News). Reliance Jio has rolled out its 5G VoNR (Voice over New Radio) services across India, becoming the first operator in the country to offer this technology. Unlike Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi), which rely on 4G VoLTE fallback for calls, Jio’s 5G standalone (SA) network ensures that both data and voice run entirely on the 5G layer.

What is special about VoNR?
VoNR promises lower latency, faster call setup times, and clearer voice quality compared to 4G VoLTE. The technology also improves battery efficiency, as devices no longer need to switch between 5G data and 4G calling layers.
However, experts say that while the improvement is noticeable, it may not be a radical leap for everyday users. If Jio’s 5G signal strength is weak in a given area, call quality could still suffer.
Airtel and Vi lag behind
Airtel and Vodafone Idea currently run their 5G services on non-standalone (NSA) networks, which depend on 4G infrastructure. As a result, voice calls on their networks still fall back to 4G VoLTE, even if the data is carried over 5G.
Value for consumers
Jio’s 5G VoNR service may be best described as a value add-on rather than a game-changing feature. It brings incremental improvements to call clarity and efficiency but is not indispensable. Still, given Jio’s relatively competitive tariffs compared to Airtel, users could experience better value overall.
